When people think of summertime, they usually think of strawberries. This sweet and tangy fruit is wonderful in pies and strawberry shortcake, but you must choose ripe berries. When it comes to this particular berry, there is a fine line between under-ripe and overripe. That doesn't mean that it's hard to find the perfect strawberries. In fact, it's quite easy.

1. Shop seasonally. While you can get strawberries all year, you'll get the best flavor when they're in season in your area. In order for berries to arrive looking beautiful, they must be shipped slightly under-ripe. What you think is a ripe strawberry is really just a pretty strawberry. The flavor will not be the same as berries that are grown locally. When you buy locally grown berries, they are picked at the peak of perfection and will have the best flavor possible.
2. Look for a bright red color. Strawberries should not have any green or white color on the flesh of the berry. Green and white spots mean that the berries are under-ripe. They also shouldn't be dark red. A dark red color is a sign that the berries are overripe. Ripe strawberries are a beautiful bright red.
3. Remember that size isn't everything. While huge strawberries may be appealing, you do need to consider the fact that they are hollow in the center. You also need to remember that there are different varieties of strawberries. Just because the berries aren't big, doesn't mean that they aren't ripe.
4. Avoid blemishes. Mushy spots on strawberries means that they were either roughly handled or they're overripe. Either way, you want to avoid these blemishes. Instead, look for berries that are firm, but not rock hard. Strawberries should have a slight give when they are perfectly ripe.
5. Pick your own. If you want a chance to choose the best of the best, visit a farm that allows you to pick your own strawberries. Not only will you get the best strawberries, but you'll save money as well.
