Why Most People Like Sweet and Fatty Foods

Often we prefer sweet and fatty foods than vegetables and fruits. There are several factors that influence this desire that we have. From prehistoric factors to psychological factors.

Professor Andrew Hill, Head of Academic Unit of the Department of Behavioral and Psychological Sciences at the University of Leeds, UK, explained that there are several factors that affect human food choice.

In terms of evolutionary factors, according to him, in prehistoric times, the opiods and dopamie human brain react when someone eats high-calorie foods. Those part of the brain reacts when the body gets benefit from calories so it orders to get more calories as a form of survival mechanism.

“Our brain is programmed to enjoy fatty and sweet foods. The brain tell your body to search,” said Andrew, according to The Daily Mail, Sunday, May 1, 2011.

The mechanism of the body still happens in humans now even though the need for nutrients is reduced compared to prehistoric times.

Another factor that causes us to want fatty and sweet foods is the level of stress. When stressed, the body produces the cortisol hormones. This hormone functions to increase blood sugar levels that are used as a source of energy for body cells. The hormone also suppresses the immune system and suppress the metabolism of acids in fat, proteins, and carbohydrates. It also stops the release of the hormone leptin and insulin that can increase hunger.

That is why during stress, the body easily feels hunger and searches for high-calorie foods such as cakes and other sweet foods.

Another factor which affects this is mood. The pattern of eating desire is formed since childhoodwhen parents give candy as a reward for good behavior. Sweet foods can ease the pain.

When we eat sweet foods, the brain release chemicals that encourage a sense of euphoria. So, it is no surprise that most people like sweet foods.
